Avoid a tip, hire a skip - we're the number one!
Our Wood Recycling Process
At Nolan Recycling, we’re committed to ensuring that waste wood doesn’t go to waste. Instead, it becomes a valuable resource in the production of renewable energy. Here's how we do it:
Collection / Arrival
Manual Sorting & Grading
Forwarding for Recovery
Sustainability in Action
Step 1 - Collection / Arrival
Wood waste arrives at our facility either via our own skip services or through direct delivery by businesses and trade partners.
Step 2 - Manual Sorting & Grading
We don’t rely on machines, our experienced sorters inspect and grade each item by hand, using deep knowledge of wood types and treatments built over years in the industry.
We sort the wood into two main grades:
Grade A - Untreated wood e.g. Clean pallets, bare timber, offcuts
Grade C - Treated or Coated Wood e.g. Painted pallets, MDF, fence panels, laminated flooring.
Step 3 - Forwarding for Recovery
Once sorted, the wood is sent to trusted partners for energy recovery:
Grade A wood is used in UK-based biomass facilities or power plants, where it is incinerated efficiently to produce heat and power.
Grade C wood is sent to specialist incineration plants that use advanced gasification technology and flue gas treatment to minimise emissions and capture harmful pollutants.
We do not shred, chip, or incinerate any wood on-site—our focus is on expert sorting and routing, ensuring the right materials end up in the right recovery streams.
This labour-intensive approach ensures a high level of material recovery and minimal contamination.
Step 4 - Why It Matters:
By turning waste into fuel, we help:
Reduce landfill dependency
Support UK energy production
Lower carbon emissions
Contribute to a circular economy
Every piece of wood we process plays a role in powering homes and businesses, and reducing the environmental impact of waste.
